HELP US RESTORE "PARA LAS ROSAS!"
In 1985, the Mime Troupe commissioned renowned artist Juana Alicia Montoya to create a mural for the front of our studio and office space at 855 Treat Avenue. The resulting mural is a colorful neighborhood landmark that has been published in many books. Entitled Para Las Rosas/For the Roses, the monumental work depicts the diverse community of the Mission District and many decades of Mime Troupe political theater history.
Over time, this stunning work has fallen victim to graffiti, vandalism, and 20-plus years of damp Bay Area weather. The Mime Troupe and Juana Alicia have addressed some of the damage by doing occasional minor graffiti cleanup and applying fresh coats of varnish. However, in the past few years, the graffiti problem has intensified and a large portion of the mural is now defaced. What was once a source of pride to both our company and our neighbors is now falling into neglect.
Juana Alicia is on board to restore the mural herself as soon as we have raised the funds to do so. Unfortunately, we failed to receive the grant that we hoped would ensure this work take place in the summer of 2010, so a final renovation date is not yet set. It is a big job; restoration will include graffiti cleanup, removing buildup from the entire surface, major repainting of new acrylic colors, and then a final coating with a heavy duty varnish to make future graffiti removal easier. It will involve not only Juana Alicia, but a team of 5-10 painters and assistants, as well as the rental of scaffolding and the purchase of significant amounts of paint and other supplies. While we of course will secure as many in-kind donations of supplies as we can, and expect that many of the painters and assistants will be volunteers, there still remains a sizable final price tag, a total of roughly $35,000.
Though we may not be able to take on this project as soon as we'd hoped, the Mime Troupe is still committed to restoring this beautiful work of art. All donations we have received thus far are being held and are still earmarked for this project, as will those that we continue to receive. Fundraising for the restoration is ongoing, so if this is something you'd like to contribute to, please do so! You can donate right through this webpage; be sure to use the "donate" button below to ensure that it is applied specifically to the mural. Donations of any amount are greatly welcome!
