Eleven years ago we were saying, “Yes we can!” These days it’s, “Oh no he didn’t!” Closing out this stranger-than-fiction decade, 2019 has been a big year for historians and late night comedians as Mr. Trump’s Wild Ride spirals out of control.
In spite of this, 2019 was an upbeat year for the Mime Troupe. We turned 60 and celebrated with our hit Treasure Island; a Certificate of Honor from the SF Board of Supervisors; a Theatre Bay Area nomination for Best World Premiere Musical and an epic 60th birthday retrospective at the revamped Presidio Theatre. Meanwhile our 24-year-old Youth Theater Project (YTP) produced two timely plays about environmental (in)justice and the toxic legacy of greed.
At 60, many think of retirement, but fueled by this year’s outpouring of support we are more fired up than ever. Our goals are ambitious: resume national touring; expand our educational programs; revive Second Stage, (our journeyman compact/pop up troupe); and our BIG VISION - a phased reconfiguration of our Mission District home-base to offer more resources to our artist friends and community, many who continue to be displaced.
We’re reminded, once again, how essential each of us is for our mutual survival as citizen activists and artists. This was made clear this year when a financial rough patch threatened our season and a windfall estate bequest saved the summer! Not taking corporate money means we depend on you, our extended family of supporters, to help us realize our mission.
so Today, we are asking for your help more than ever:
As you make your regular (increased!) donation - challenge your family/friends to match it!
Insure SFMT’s future by making a legacy gift!
Ask your co-workers “Have you heard of the San Francisco Mime Troupe?” If they haven’t, sing our praises and better yet, bring them to a show!
Spread the word through social media & be sure to remind folks “It’s not that kind of mime!”
Become a SFMT volunteer, we can always put you to work.
Engage in discussions and encourage people to participate in our democracy.
The 2020 election outcome will determine our future and that of the planet.
Everything is at stake including the Constitution.
Will it be relegated to an archival piece of parchment or remain a living road map to a more perfect union?
Join us during this critical year as we continue to exercise our rights in our quest to make America sane again.
In Solidarity now and for the next 60!
