Balboa After-School “Plays For Change”
Playwriting Residency - Spring 2026

The Youth Theater Project (YTP) at the San Francisco Mime Troupe (SFMT) is thrilled to offer an 8-week after-school Playwriting Residency at Balboa High School. This unique program invites students of all experience levels- from first-time writers to those with previous creative experience- to explore their voices and develop original plays in a supportive, professional environment.

With only 10 available slots, this residency functions like an internship: participants apply and are selected through a brief interview, then work closely with a professional Bay Area playwright, gaining insight into the craft of playwriting and the experience of creating theater as a professional artist. Students engage in writing exercises, collaborative workshops, and independent projects designed to help them craft a 10-minute play on a topic they feel passionate about- whether local, national, global, personal, or social.

The residency meets twice a week after school for eight weeks, culminating in a showcase of student work during the final week. Through this immersive experience, students develop not only the technical skills of playwriting but also confidence, self-expression, and a deeper appreciation for the creative process. Past participants have shared that the residency challenged them in surprising ways, sparked new creativity, and helped them discover a love for storytelling they didn’t know they had.

As part of YTP’s 30th anniversary, this residency continues SFMT’s tradition of fostering young artists who are curious, courageous, and socially aware. Students are invited to experiment, take risks, and explore ideas freely- learning that theater is not only a craft but also a powerful tool for reflection, dialogue, and change.
