ABOUT

The primary goal of the Youth Theater Project is to use theater as a means to artistically and creatively express the opinions of young people on topics that are relevant to their lives.

Spring Youth Theater Project happens from February to April in our studio located in the Mission District of San Francisco.

Our youth theater apprentices represent different neighborhoods and communities from all over the Bay and are mentored by a diverse team of theater practitioners/social justice artists.

Youth apprentices commit to an acting and playmaking workshop that meets weekdays after school.

The program culminates in a public performance where the youth apprentices perform the original plays they create with their ensemble.  YTP provides meals and snacks at each workshop session and youth apprentices will be paid at the completion of the program. The Youth Theater Project is entirely funded by foundations & individual donors and is always free to participants.

The curriculum of the workshop process includes:  team building exercises, burning issue discussions, story-telling, improvisation, character development, playwriting, and choreography.

The Youth Theater Project promotes artistic expression, discipline, and cross-cultural understanding as creative alternatives to drugs, gangs, prejudice, hostility and violence. YTP is founded on the belief that youth in our society grow up lacking the attention and respect they need to love and respect themselves and to understand each other. The workshop experience fosters an increase in the participant's self-confidence, expands their world view, and leaves them inspired to continue using art as a means of personal and political expression.

YTP offers participants the opportunity to investigate and express their thoughts, reactions, and calls to action. Our goal is to guide our participants in artistic and creative expression of their opinions and to create meaningful theater art!

The intensive program will meet after school at the Mime Troupe Studio for sessions. The program culminates in a final showing that will take place in the final week of the program.

YTP is open to all high school aged students and recent high school grads. If you have questions about your eligibility, please email ytp@sfmt.org.

The SF Mime Troupe's YTP is FREE OF CHARGE for all! In fact, our youth participants are able to earn a stipend upon completion of the program.
