INTERNSHIPS

 

Administrative internship
 

Duration: May through early September
Time Commitment: Full-Time (40hrs) each week

Description: The Administrative Intern works in the office directly with the General Manager, Tour Manager & Production Stage Manager by helping with a variety of day to day operations. Applicants should have outstanding organizational and research abilities, a great telephone demeanor and proven word processing and computer skills. Tasks include logging donations, writing email blasts, managing a limited number of performance guest lists, brief front of house management, procuring food donations, organizing publicity runs, preparing meals for the cast and crew, assisting in the park during opening weekend and much more! This internship offers hands-on, practical experience of how a non-profit theater office functions.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT (CE)

 

Duration: March/April and runs through August/Sept; can also be offered year round
Time Commitment: Full time (40hrs) to part-time (25 hrs) each week
 

Description: Tasks include research, writing and collaboration/outreach to identify resources relevant to our summer show topics and administrative work as needed. The CE intern will arrange and oversee forums drawing from community connections they establish. Skills needed: resourcefulness, strong attention to detail, good communication, ability to work independently and as part of a team. Familiarity with: Excel, Word, & Social Media. Applicants must possess a strong desire to engage with culturally diverse communities and activist organizations. This internship ranges from full time (40hrs) to part-time (25 hrs) each week and can also be offered year round. Read a rough time line break down of this internship.

COSTUME DESIGN (COSTUME)

​

Duration: June through early September
Time Commitment: Full-time (40hrs) each week

Description: Costume intern begins at the very beginning of June and will work directly with the productions' Costume Designer as an apprentice: pulling, building, altering, machine and hand stitching as well as some shopping, and help with wig styling if necessary. Previous experience in a costume shop is strongly recommended. Due to the fact that we use multiple casting, the costume intern should be detail oriented, fast on their feet and able to help solve quick change rigging issues. This internship can be limited to the pre-production/design/build phase or can expand to include wardrobe maintenance and assisting with load-in/load out of the summer show until the end of September.

SCENIC DESIGN/TECHNICAL DIRECTION (SCENIC)

Duration: Late May through early September
Time Commitment: Full-time (40hrs) each week

Description: Scenic Design/Technical Direction Intern begins in late May and will work directly with the production's Technical Director and Scenic Designer as an apprentice carpenter, painter, and rigger. Familiarity with scenic painting, carpentry, rigging and power tools is strongly recommended. Creative application of stage craft skills is needed to solve the challenges of an outdoor, portable and versatile set. After opening, intern will assist in directing the load-in/out of the summer show, paint touch-ups, repair and maintenance of the set. Internship lasts from pre-production/build to end of summer season.

SOUND DESIGN/ENGINEERING (SOUND)

Duration: Mid-June through early September
Time Commitment: Full-time (40hrs) each week

Description: Intern will work under the supervision of the production's Audio Engineer and will assist/learn the set up and running of a touring theatrical pro-audio system. Will attendance at some rehearsals and all local performance. Basic familiarity with mixing live music is important. The work will include proper EQing and compressing techniques, as well as detailed troubleshooting for snakes and complex multipin setups. The San Francisco Mime Troupe represents one of the most challenging and unique sound system setups in the theatrical touring industry. Live musicians and singers in an outdoor non-controlled environment pose unique challenges.

Production assistant (PA)

​

Duration: First day of summer show rehearsal (mid May) through early September

Time Commitment: Full-time (40hrs) each week

Description: For anyone who wants to see the SFMT rehearsal process in action and be out in the parks with us for almost every show - this is the position for you! During pre-production, in addition to observing rehearsals (which will sometimes involve your being on book or standing in for a missing actor), PAs will assist in the scene shop with building/painting, the costume shop with hand sewing/sweeping, the office by making copies/folding programs, and will take the lead on preparing SFMT merchandise for sale in the park! Once the show opens, PAs will assist with load-in/out at each park, hand out programs and run the SFMT Store plus much, much more! The Mime Troupe is an Equity theater company and EMC points can be earned by PAs.
